DISH Network First and Only 500 Channel Digital Television System After Launch of New High Power Satellite
EchoStar Communications Corporation (NASDAQ:DISH,DISHP) announced today that EchoStar V, EchoStar's newest, state-of-the-art, high-power direct broadcast satellite from Space Systems/Loral, has arrived at Cape Canaveral Air Station, Fla., for launch in September.
Pending check-out tests, fueling and final integration of the
satellite to the launch vehicle, as well as final flight certification
from Lockheed Martin Astronautics, EchoStar V is scheduled to launch
on a Lockheed Martin Atlas IIAS rocket on Sept. 10, 1999. The Atlas
IIAS booster and the Centaur upper stage portions of the rocket
arrived in Cape Canaveral on July 30 from Lockheed Martin Astronautics
in Denver, Colo.
The launch of EchoStar V, to be located at 110 degrees West
Longitude, marks a turning point in television history. With a
successful launch, EchoStar's DISH Network™ will expand its already
outstanding 350 channel line-up, and become the first and only TV
provider in the nation to offer 500 digital video and audio channels
from a single small dish pointed at both the 110 degree W.L. and the
119 degree W.L. orbital slots.
The EchoStar V satellite will also provide Alaska and Hawaii with
an alternative to cable for the first time ever.
EchoStar V will also introduce the American public to 21st
century technology by delivering multiple channels of cutting-edge
high definition television, expanded Dolby Digital surround sound,
Internet and interactive data services.
In addition, with a pro-competition outcome to the legislation
now being considered by Congress, which would protect the rights of
consumers, EchoStar V would expand DISH Network's satellite delivery
of network channels beyond the 13 cities currently served to include
more than 70 percent of the U.S. population.
The DISH Network continues to lead the industry with more
channels, more choices, and the best value for popular television
programming. This month, EchoStar will begin selling the DISH 500
satellite TV system with EchoStar's Model 4722 for the low price of
DISH Network will continue to offer existing customers
crystal-clear digital video and CD-quality audio, including an
on-screen programming guide and V-chip type parental control
technology, without replacing their current satellite receivers. DISH
500 will also be available for DISHPlayer™, the world's first
integrated satellite and Internet receiver using WebTV Networks, Inc.,
WebTV Plus service for satellite.
Built by Space Systems/Loral in Palo Alto, Calif., EchoStar V is
an FS-1300 series spacecraft with 32 110-watt Ku-band transponders.
EchoStar V is capable of power-combining to 16 transponders at 220
watts each to meet the transmission demands of consumers.
To date, EchoStar has launched four high-power direct-broadcast
satellites that offer 350 all digital channels to over 2.7 million
DISH Network customers nationwide.
