EchoStar Acquires Eldon Technology Limited

LITTLETON, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 27, 1999--EchoStar Communications Corp. (NASDAQ: DISH, DISHP) announced today that privately held Eldon Technology Limited, a digital electronics design firm based in the U.K., has been acquired by EchoStar UK Holdings Limited, a subsidiary of EchoStar Communications Corporation. EchoStar UK Holdings Limited acquired the entire issued share capital of Eldon Technology Limited for US$9 million.

"Eldon Technology Limited brings years of experience and success in designing digital televisions and set-top boxes in the European marketplace and will serve as an important tool for EchoStar," said Mike Dugan, president of EchoStar Technologies Corp. "The acquisition of Eldon Technology will strengthen EchoStar's product design capabilities for satellite receivers and integrated televisions in both the international and U.S. markets."

"Eldon Technology hopes to provide design services to third parties and existing customers, thus continuing its current business while providing a valuable addition to the EchoStar engineering team designing EchoStar-branded products," said Stuart Holmes, managing director of Eldon Technology Limited. "The commercial side of the business will continue to support the third party work while taking an active part in forming and maintaining strategic relationships within the industry for the benefit of the organization as a whole."

Eldon Technology was established in 1988 by 11 senior managers and design engineers from the former Ferguson New Product Research Centre in Bradford. Since its formation, Eldon has grown to over 70 employees providing extensive and widely diverse support services for many major manufacturers of consumer and non-consumer electronics-based products and components. These services include product design, feasibility studies and prototype development.

As a natural addition to Eldon's activities in designing monitors and televisions, the company has been working for over five years in the area of digital television receiver and set-top box design, including both electronic hardware and software. During this period, Eldon has built up considerable experience in the design of digital TV hardware and suites of software as well as supplying designs for digital television set-top boxes and integrated digital televisions (IDTV) to many well-known major brands.
